Ted Neeley, the man who rose to fame playing Jesus in the filmic adaptation of the stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar, is still alive and kicking. Being as this man rose to fame playing one of the most famous men in history, you could imagine that Neeley may have found it hard to go onto other roles throughout this career. However, this was hardly the case.
In terms of the filmic adaptation, Neeley originally auditioned for the role of Judas but the director requested that he come back and try out for Jesus. He’s been playing Jesus ever since although he has also worked in such filmic adaptations as Hair, which led to Jesus Christ Superstar, and then performing in such hits as Tommy and Sgt, Pepper.
Touring with Jesus Christ Superstar in the 1990s, Neeley criss-crossed the United States and brought the role of Jesus to life once again. There is talk that Cabaret, starring Alan Cumming as the Emcee, may make a return to Studio 54 after its acclaimed 1998 revival. Due to the huge artistic success of the 1998 revival, there is speculation that bringing the show back to its old haunt would allow new audiences to see the production who may not have been able to see the show the first time it was produced. As an added bonus, should Cabaret be produced, again, at Roundabout Theater’s Studio 54, the financial aspects would be more beneficial than they would should the show be produced at a commercial theater.
Unlike being produced at a commercial theater, if this engagement of Cabaret made a profit, the money would go into other productions – totaling around seven new stagings a year – as well as educational programs. Keep up with stubhub.com and get ready to buy tickets for what is guaranteed to be a great revival of a great show!
