Leo Burmester, a Broadway veteran who was most recently seen by audiences as Hucklebee in the Off-Broadway revival of The Fantasticks, succumed to leukemia yesterday, Thursday, June 28, 2007. Burmester was 63 years old when he died.
A talented performer who hailed from Louisville, Kentucky, Burmester appeared on Broadway in many shows including “Urban Cowboy,” “Thou Shalt Not,” “The Civil War,” “Ah Wilderness,” “Buried Child,” “Big River,” and “Lone Star and Pvt. Wars.” Additionally, Burmester originated the role of the money-grubbing innkeeper Thenardier in the original Broadway cast of “Les Miserables.”
Burmester also appeared in dozens of television and movie roles not least of which included “The Devil’s Advocate,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” and “Lone Star,” and the actor had just finished filming a part in Spike Lee’s film “M.O.N.Y.”

The Manhattan Theater Club announced the full cast for its upcoming production of Mauritius on Broadway. The play, written by Theresa Rebeck, will come to life thanks to the talents of Academy Award-winner F. Murray Abraham, DYlan Baker and Katie Finneran among many others.
Past projects of these talented cast mates include hits as the film version of Amadeus, Triumph of Love, The Merchant of Venice and The Jew of Malta, for F. It has been announced that Spike Lee will be doing a theatrical project utilizing the Great White Way, but he will not reveal what this announced project is until a press conference to take place tomorrow, June 28, 2007. However, it has been stated by various publications in the know that the production will most likely involve the World War II comedy-drama “Stalag 17.”
If such is the case, then audiences will have a lot to enjoy from Lee, as this storyline exists as a mystery story told from the setting of a Prisoner of War camp during World War II. The tale centers on a sergeant who is suspected of being a Nazi spy, so you can imagine how the drama unfolds. “Stalag 17″ was written by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski, famously made into a filmby Billy Wilder in 1953, starring William Holden in an Oscar-winning performance.
The play “Stalag 17″ itself premiered on Broadway in 1951 and was helmed by director Jose Ferrer who won a TOnoy Award for his efforts.
