Spring Awakening is an Enlightening Hit Among the Younger Generation!

This surprise success speaks to the disillusioned and alienated teenage generation. Finally, a musical that isn’t just geared to the stiff, old patrons that continually crowd playhouses across the country, Spring Awakening is a show you can bring your first date to and not feel like it will be a total disaster. Of course, it could lead to some awkward conversations later, but still it presents itself as a musical that you can surely write home about.

Spring Awakening is set in repressive 1890’s Germany. Don’t start yawning, I promise it won’t be like that German history class that you flunked during college. It is filled with enough hormone befuddled and despondent youngsters that you won’t even notice the historical lesson. Its main characters include Moritz, a teen who is confused by his steamy sexual dreams and his failure to impress his father; Melchior, who is that wonderful nonconformist youth who spends most of his time disobeying orders and standing up to authority and then there’s the innocent girl, Wendla, who has been sheltered her whole life and is finally demanding to know where babies come from. True you might have to jump in a cold shower after witnessing the erotic sex scene on stage, but this play is a far cry from ordinary. Spring Awakening won this year’s Tony Award for Best Musical and has won praise from critics and audiences nationwide.
