Little Mermaid is Ready to Dive Into Fresh Water

Aiken to Join Spamalot!

If you love the voice of Clay Aiken, then you will be pleased to know that he is planning on joining the Broadway cast of the Tony Award winning musical “Monty Python’s Spamalot.”  What a perfect match for this budding young star who took a hold of America’s hearts after his performance on American Idol.  Aiken will be taking on the role of Sir Robin in the hilarious production, which has audiences yowling with laughter throughout the entirety of the show.  This will be Aiken’s Broadway debut and he will begin his stint on January 18, 2008.

All the UK Needs is a Spoonful of Sugar

The question is will she sail in with her famous umbrella and will she sing a duet with a dusty chimney sweep throughout all of the UK?  It has recently been announced that the lovable musical Mary Poppins will end its run in London’s Prince Edward Theatre on January 12, 2008, but that doesn’t mean that the music will stop for good.  In fact the award winning musical will then kick off its much anticipated UK tour in June of next year.  Some of the cities that are rumored to be hosting this magical production are: Plymouth, Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff.  The casting for the touring performance will be announced soon.

This is a show that has been loved by children and their families for years now and it seems that many of us know all of the words to the unforgettable lyrics of its popular songs.  Julie Andrews will perhaps be remembered as the original Mary, but many other talented actresses have followed her lead and filled the shoes of Miss Poppins quite well.  Treat yourself to a night at the theatre when Mary Poppins begins its tour.  Perhaps the best medicine is a spoonful of sugar and a pair of Mary Poppins tickets.

McGregor Appears in Othello

Ewan McGregor, a man of many talents when it comes to acting is filling the shoes of Iago in the production of “Othello” which is set to officially open on December 4.  McGregor is a fairly well-known film actor who has appeared is such flicks as: “Star Wars,” “Miss Potter” and “Moulin Rouge.”  Yet perhaps what people don’t really know is that he has a particular fondness for acting on the stage and appeared in the West End revival of “Guys and Dolls.”  His role in “Othello” will most likely have theatre-goers lining up at the doors to get a glimpse of this famous actor in this equally famous production.

Picture Yourself at The Ritz

Get ready to laugh out loud at the revival of The Ritz when it returns to the stage on Broadway.  This is no serious show that requires straight faces and a solemn attitude.  This production will make you forget all of your worries and cares and will transport you from your mundane everyday life into the hilarious lives of all the characters that comprise The Ritz.  Rosie Perez and Kevin Chamberlin head the cast of this renowned production that has received high marks from theatre critics.  Tonight the revival opens and there will most certainly be a line of jubilant theatre patrons crowding the streets all aiming to spend their evening laughing at every twist and turn this plot offers.

The Frightful Frankenstein!

Halloween is nearly upon us, so get ready to be spooked, scared and frightened out of your wits.  Head to New York to see “Frankenstein, a New Musical” that is scheduled to jump to life tonight and don’t even think about leaving early out of fear.  Hunter Foster and Steve Blanchard take on the roles of creator and creature and everyone is in for a surprise when the monster comes to life, scaring those on stage and those seated in the audience.  Foster is known for his roles in “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Urinetown,” and “The Producers.”  Now he shows off even more of his acting talent as he takes on this horrific dramatic tale.

This particular rendition of Frankenstein is not campy and it does not portray an unusual take on the original story.  It elicits pure raw emotion, full of anger, sadness, fear and frustration.  This story tells the horrors of a creature that rebels in face of intolerance and ultimately he kills the doctor that originally gave him life.  It is a story to see if you would like to become wrapped up in a weird science fiction adventure.  It is probably not one for the whole family, but one that you should take a loved one to and snuggle down with as the frightening Frankenstein breathes fear into the hearts of everyone he encounters.  Don’t miss this harrowing tale; get your Frankenstein tickets today.

The Sopranos Take on Chicago!

If you are bummed out that the long running series “The Sopranos” has finally drawn to a close you will be pleased to know that a few of its actors are not prepared to throw in the towel.  Aida Turturro, who portrayed Janice Soprano and Vincent Pastore who played Sal Bonpensiero are expected to join the cast of the major Broadway hit Chicago starting in November.  Turturro is scheduled to take on the role of Matron “Mama” Morton and Pastore will be Amos Hart.  This is a great chance for fans to see these talented actors up onstage rather than just on the television.  Acting on screen verses on the stage is very different, yet there seems to be no doubt that both of these talented performers will be able to pull the production off beautifully.

Aida Turturro initially made her Broadway debut in the 1992 revival of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and this is the first production for Pastore.  The current Chicago Company features Brian McKnight, Brenda Braxton and Michelle DeJean in the lead roles of Billy Flynn, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart.  Theatre patrons will most likely be lining the streets when it comes time for the curtain to rise on Broadway’s new additions, so be sure to get your Chicago tickets well in advance by going to Stubhub.com.

The New Roger and Mark

Two new faces will be joining the cast of Rent in tonight’s production of the hit Broadway musical.  After the summer and early autumn return of original cast members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, Declan Bennett and Harley Jay take over the roles of Roger and Mark.  Pascal and Rapp helped boost nightly sales for Rent and long lines could be seen at the entrances of the theatres throughout the entire season that they were on the stage.  No doubt that it will be a hard act to follow, but both Bennett and Jay have acting experience and should be able to generate a large following of fans as well.

Let the Celebrations Begin!

The Opening of the Stamp War

Rebeck’s new show, “Mauritius” makes its Broadway debut tonight where two sisters are at odds with each other over a precious stamp collection left to them by their mother.  The show is a hilarious reprieve from a stressful work week and will leave you wondering whether or not you would be up in arms over an old book of postage stamps.  Alison Pill plays Jackie, one of the stamp obsessed sisters and Katie Finneran takes on the role of Jackie’s half sister Mary, who also claims ownership of the collectibles.
