A brand new play will draw open its curtain tonight as The Seafarer sets sail on Broadway. The production is by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, who also was responsible for the success of The Weir and Shining City. McPherson will direct his play, which features the actors Ciaran Hinds, Conleth Hill, Sean Mahon, David Morse and Jim Norton. Both Hill and Norton appeared in the U.K production and have crossed the Atlantic to help shine this spectacular show on the streets of Broadway.
According to press notes the play is “a chilling production about the sea, Ireland and the power of myth.” It takes place on Christmas Eve and a man by the name of Sharky has come to Dublin to look after his aging brother who has most recently lost his eyesight. A couple of old drinking friends are also holed up at the house on this dark night, looking to start a game of cards. With the arrival of a spooky stranger from the past the stakes in the card game are raised and it turns out that Sharky himself may be playing for his own soul.
