One of Broadway’s most popular productions is slated to close the curtains in June, ending a ten year run which captured the hearts of theatre-goers around the world. Rent is the seventh-longest running show in Broadway history and certainly has lived up to everyone’s expectations. The musical, inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme, is, according to press notes listed on Playbill.com “the story of a group of young artists struggling in New York’s East Village in the early 1990’s and the obstacles they face, including AIDS, homelessness, poverty, lack of healthcare and homophobia.” The show came at a time when real people struggled with these very issues and offered a peak into the harsh realities dealt with by those inflicted with AIDS.
Rent first opened at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996 following a sold out, extended limited engagement at Off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop. The musical went on to win every major best musical award, including the Tony Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama. A film was also made of the musical in 2005 featuring most of the original cast members, although it failed to receive much recognition at the box office.
