Jenifer Lewis Joins Hairspray!

Jenifer Lewis is set to take over the role of Motormouth Maybelle in one of Broadway’s much loved productions, “Hairspray.”  She begins her run on the show April 22 at the Neil Simon Theatre.  Lewis is known as one of Bette Midler’s former Harlettes and she is a Broadway actress whose credits include “Eubie” and “Comin’ Uptown.”  Lewis will replace Motown singer Darlene Love, who has been with the Broadway cast of Hairspray since July 2005.  Jenifer Lewis returns to Broadway following much film and TV work like “Meet the Browns,” “Corrina, Corrina” and “Sister Act,” among many others.

According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, in Hairspray, “it’s 1962-the 50’s are out and change is in the air.  Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion-to dance.  She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, ‘The Corny Collins Show’ and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.  But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her ‘do?’”  Don’t miss out on this hilarious show, get your Hairyspray tickets today!
