Xanadu Performers Have Renewed Contracts!

The producers of the hit show Xanadu have recently announced that all the stars of their new musical have renewed their contracts through January 2009.  Those actors that have renewed their contracts include: Kerry Butler, Cheyenne Jackson, Tony Roberts, Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa.  Xanadu currently plays at the Helen Hayes Theater and it is based on the film of the same name.  The musical is a popular hit among fans of all ages from around the world.  The show recently received six Drama Desk nominations, one of which includes the award for Best Musical.

According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, the musical, “tell the story of one of the nine muses of ancient Greece who comes to earth to inspire the greatest of artistic achievements-a roller disco.  Along the way she falls in love, bumps into an old acquaintance and for the first time, feels the desire to create herself.”  This is a show that is popular among many people around the world.  If you want to treat yourself to a wonderful time at the theater, make sure to get your own pair of Xanadu tickets.


The Country Girl Makes a Return to Broadway!

Fans are getting excited about the return of an exceptional play called “Country Girl.”  The play has just recently opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater.  The show stars Frances McDorman, Morgan Freeman and Peter Gallagher and is directed by Mike Nichols.  According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, The Country Girl is “a classic backstage story.  The title character, Georgie, is married to actor Frank Elgin, once a great theatre star, now down on his luck.  When Frank is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd he has the chance to make a major comeback.”

Catered Affair Gets 12 Nominations!

A Catered Affair is already racking up the nominations for the 53rd Annual Drama Desk Awards.  The Awards ceremony takes place on April 28 at the New York Friars Club and anybody who is interested in theater will most likely be tuned in to get the immediate results.  The new musical has earned 12 nominations, the most of any other show of the 2007-2008 season.  Other shows that were showered with multiple nominations included: “Adding Machine,” Young Frankenstein” and “South Pacific.”  A Catered Affair started its run at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and has been a huge success among fans of the theater.

Leo Evens Set to Take on Role in London’s West Side Story!

Leo Ash Evens, who is known for playing the character of Tulsa in the production of “Gypsy,” has landed the role of Riff in the upcoming production of West Side Story.  He will play in the classic musical from the dates July 22 to August 31.  Evens was quoted on Playbill.com as saying, “This is my fourth time in the role, and I’m equally as excited as the first!  From Houston TUTs to Barrington Stage to the 50th anniversary tour last summer, playing Riff has been an incredible opportunity for me to grow as an actor.  I’m really excited to work with Joey as well.”  Evens has also appeared in the productions of Oklahoma!, 42nd Street, West Side Story and Chicago, among many others.

West Side Story features a score by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.  The musical first opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on September 26, 1957 and it played 732 performances before closing on June 27, 1959.  It is well known for it’s classic songs like “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.”  You will want to catch Leo Evens in this production, so make sure to get your own pair of West Side Story tickets from Stubhub.com


Cry Me a River!

It’s official: Cry Baby opens tonight on Broadway, much to the excitement of dedicated theater fans.  The entrance of the show onto Broadway follows an acclaimed out-of-town engagement at the La Jolla Playhouse last fall.  The show has been a smash hit with fans and many are thrilled to know that this acclaimed show has made it to one of the world’s most famous theater districts.  The show is set in 1950’s Baltimore and is based on the 1990 film of the same name.  The show features a rockabilly score that is also well received by fans.

Kiss Me Kate Opens at Paper Mill Playhouse!

Young Frankenstein On Top of Outer Critics Circle Awards Nominations!

The nominees for the 58th annual Outer Critics Circle Awards were just recently announced on April 21 at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan. The Mel Brooks musical, Young Frankenstein, was lavished with the most nominations of any show, garnering ten nods. Some of the nods for Young Frankenstein include: “Outstanding New Broadway Musical,” “Outstanding New Score,” “Outstanding Director of a Musical,” “Outstanding Choreographer,” “Outstanding Set Design,” ” Outstanding Lighting Design,” “Outstanding Actor in a Musical,” and “Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.”

Kerry Butler to Release New Album

Kerry Butler is planning to release her debut solo album in May and her many fans are certainly excited about the prospect of a new album from this talented performer. The CD will be called “Faith, Trust and Pixie Dust” and it will includes songs like: “This Only Happens in the Movies,” and “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Butler was quoted in a statement on Playbill.com as saying, “I’ve wanted to do an album for a long time, and with success of Xanadu, the Timing seemed right. Recording the Xanadu recording for PS Classics was such a joyous experience, we decided to continue our relationship on my solo album.”

Kerry Butler is also known for staring on Broadway as Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors,” and she portrayed Penny Pingleton in the original Broadway cast of Hairspray. Her other credits include: Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Eponinie in Les Miserables and Ms. Jones in Blood Brothers. She obviously has a great talent and the new album will showcase her incredible skills as a renowned singer. A Catered Affair Arrives on Broadway!
