Cheyenne Jackson From Xanadu Cast in Shifting the Canvas

Cheyenne Jackson, who plays the character of Sonny, in the Broadway musical Xanadu has been cast in the upcoming new film called “Shifting the Canvas.”  The film is directed by Chuck Griffith and according to press notes on Playbill.com, “tells the story about a group of artists living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn who struggle to maintain a rather dysfunctional family of friends in a post-9/11 world challenged by gentrification, deception and sterilization.”  Jackson is ready to play the role of Jens, who is straight Ivy League type who works on Wall Street with a young gay character.

Jackson is wildly popular on Broadway and is well known for his role in the hit show of Xanadu.  According to the Xanadu website, the play “follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Jason Alexander Set to Appear in Candide!

Jason Alexander, of Seinfeld is set to play the role of Pangloss in the upcoming concert staging of Candide at Wolf Trap.  The concert is going to take place on July 6 at the Filene Center and it will feature the Wolf Trap Opera Company, The City Choir of Washington and the National Symphony Orchestra.  The evening will be directed by James Robinson and the show will also boast the talents of Dominic Armstrong, Anne Caroly Bird and James Kee.  This should be a great show, so you will want to make sure to get your tickets as soon as possible.

The New Century Takes the Stage!

All theater patrons will be thrilled to know that yet another anticipated show will hit the stage in an off-Broadway production of The New Century.  The show will officially open at the Lincoln Center Theater on April 14.  The Manhattan-set comedy is actually a series of four short plays which are: “Pride and Joy,” “Currently of Palm Beach,” Crafty” and “The New Century.”  The show will star the actors Peter Bartlett, Jayne Houdyshell, Linda Lavin, Mike Doyle and Christy Pusz.  Nicholas Martin directs this upcoming show.

According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, “Linda Lavin is Helene, a Jewish matron from Massapequa and the self-proclaimed ‘most loving mother of all time’ to her three gay children.  Peter Bartlett is the flamboyant Mr. Charles, currently of Palm Beach, described by Mr. Rudnick as ‘an aging homosexual hounded out of New York City by younger gay men, who find his flamboyance a threatening throwback to an earlier tougher time.’  Mick Doyle plays two roles: Helene’s son, the doctor, David, and Shane, Mr. Charles’s partner in life and on their cable television show, ‘Too Gay.’ Jayne Houdyshell is Barbara Ellen, a Midwestern craftswoman and competitive cake-decorator on a visit to New York, and Christy Pusz is Joanne, the cable show’s young receptionist.”  Get your The New Century tickets!

Dirty Dancing Comes to L.A.

The classic story, “Dirty Dancing” will officially make its West Coast premiere at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles in Spring of 2009.  Although specific dates have not yet been announced, fans are already getting geared up for the inclusion of this timeless and loved musical to take up residents in their city.  The musical is full of amazing dance routines and it is based on the wildly popular film that starred actor Patrick Swayze.  Currently the production is showing in London and it stars the renowned performers Georgina Rich and Josef Brown.

A Fourth High School Musical!

Disney is getting preparations ready for the fourth installment in its popular “High School Musical” franchise.  “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” has done exceptionally well with audiences especially after it was made into a film and it is scheduled for a fall film release.  Teen audiences everywhere are most likely going to be looking forward to the upcoming fourth installment of this wildly successful musical series.  According to Playbill.com, “the tales of Troy, Sharpay, Montez, Chad and gang contineu to maintain popularity with ‘tween audiences worldwide.”

Passing Strange Cast Due to Release Album

The wildly acclaimed new musical “Passing Strange” is set to release a new cast album that will be recorded at the Belasco Theatre.  The musical is known on Broadway for blending the excitement and the immediacy of a rock concert with Broadway theatricality.  In a statement posted on Playbill.com, Stew, who wrote the book and lyrics to the show said, “A live recording session of Passing Strange will be a wildly unique event.  More than just a live show document or a studio recording, we are aiming for a freaky hybrid of the two.”  The cast is geared up to perform songs from the musical and fans of the show will have the opportunity to attend the live recording session and proceeds will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Macbeth Set to Open Tonight on Broadway!

If you are a fan of Shakespeare you might want to jump on the ball and see the murder filled tragedy Macbeth, which opens tonight on Broadway.  Patrick Stewart stars in the title role and will most likely put on a much heralded show.  Stewart plays Macbeth in Shakespeare’s well known bloody tragedy which, according to press notes posted on Playbill.com is about “a murderous general’s ascent to the throne with the aid of his plotting wife, portrayed by Kate Fleetwood.”  Previews began on March 29 and followed critically praised engagements at BAM and in the West End.  Macbeth runs through May 24.

Patrick Stewart has starred in the Broadway revival of Harold Pinter’s “The Caretaker.”  Some of his additional stage credits include “A Christmas Carol,” “The Ride Down Mt. South Pacific Revival Opens on Broadway

Fans will be happy to know that the hit Pulitzer Prize winning musical, “South Pacific” will once again be featured on the Broadway stage.  It officially opens tonight at the Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont.  The stars of the musical are Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara and Paulo Szot, who fill the shoes of the lovers who “meet across a crowded room.”  South Pacific boasts a 30 piece orchestra conducted by Tony Award winner Ted Sperling and an expansive set by Tony Award winning designer Michael Yeargan.  O’Hara was last seen on the Beaumont stage in “The Light in the Piazza,” and South Pacific also features Danny Burstein, Loretta Ables and Victor Hawks.

According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, South Pacific is “based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of short stories ‘Tales of the South Pacific.’  The musical focuses on French plantation owner Emile de Becque and his love interest, Nellie Forbush, a naive young nurse from Arkansas.  Set against the backdrop of the Second World War, South Pacific offers a lushly romantic score while challenging audiences with themes of racial intolerance and bigotry.  Make sure not to miss this fantastic production with your pair of South Pacific tickets.
