The hit musical “Spring Awakening” which has made waves in the theater world is traveling overseas to the U.K. for a much anticipated premiere. The musical will start performances on January 23, 2009 and will officially open on February 3. Londoners are thrilled to have the heralded musical right in their backyard and ticket sales are expected to be high. David Farr, who is the artistic director at the Lyric Hammersmith was quoted on Playbill.com as saying, “The Spring Awakening team are ground-breaking artists and we’re thrilled to be working alongside them to bring this extraordinary work to the London stage.”
Spring Awakening made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June of 2006. Currently it plays on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theater and is popular among people of all different ages. It is based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind and has won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including the one for Best Musical.
