There were many winners at the Tony Awards on June 15 and some of the biggest winners were August: Osage County, South Pacific, Boeing-Boeing and In the Heights. South Pacific emerged the show with the most awards, carting away seven Tonys by the end of the night. In the Heights took four awards and was somewhat of a surprise because of its new sound that it has brought to Broadway, including the beats of Caribbean-influenced music, hip hop and rap. The show is viewed as a feel good musical about 21st centruy Latino immigrants who are struggling to succeed in their colorful neighborhood at the top of Manhattan.
In the Heights won Best Musical, overcoming Cry-Baby, Passing Strange and Xanadu. South Pacific took the Tonys for Best Performance By a Leading Actor in a Musical by Paulo Szot and Best Revival of a Musical, among others.
