A Wrap Up of the Tony Awards

There were many winners at the Tony Awards on June 15 and some of the biggest winners were August: Osage County, South Pacific, Boeing-Boeing and In the Heights.  South Pacific emerged the show with the most awards, carting away seven Tonys by the end of the night.  In the Heights took four awards and was somewhat of a surprise because of its new sound that it has brought to Broadway, including the beats of Caribbean-influenced music, hip hop and rap.  The show is viewed as a feel good musical about 21st centruy Latino immigrants who are struggling to succeed in their colorful neighborhood at the top of Manhattan.

Tonys Given Out on Sunday

Spring Awakening to Embark on National Tour

The popular show Spring Awakening will soon be featured in towns and cities across the country, much to the excitement of fans all over.  The Tony Award winning musical will appear at San Diego’s Balboa Theater on August 15 through the 31 before it heads to San Francisco for its official tour launch.  Some other engagements for the new tour include runs in Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and St. Louis.  Casting for the tour will be announced soon and theater patrons eagerly await to see who will be stepping into the title roles.

Shrek World Premiere!

The world premiere of the hit musical Shrek is nearing at tickets to the show are going to go on sale on June 13.  The show is scheduled to take place at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater.  Good news for all fans who are the first 100 people at the theater’s box office will be the lucky recipients of a set of Shrek ears.  The ensemble cast is full of talented actors and actresses including Brian d’Arcy James, Chester Gregory and John Tartaglia.

Lion King to Perform on Today Show!

The cast of the hit production The Lion King is slated to perform on NBC’s Today Show on June 12.  The performance will celebrate the long running musical’s tenth anniversary.  The Lion King will open the 2008 Tony Awards telecast with the hit song “Circle of Life.”  The Lion King is a popular musical and has been seen by millions of people worldwide since its opening on November 12, 1997.  The show has in fact won over 30 major awards since it first appeared on the stage.  Some of the awards include six Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards and six Outer Critics Awards, among others.

The popular comedy by David Mamet is scheduled to come to a close before fall even begins.  November comes to a close in July, so you will want to scramble to get tickets before they all sell out. South Pacific Tops the Billboard Cast Albums Chart

Frank Wood to Join August: Osage County

The Tony Award winning actor from “Side Man” is prepared to step into the role of Bill Fordham in the production of August: Osage County.  Frank Wood joins the cast on June 17 and is ready to involve himself in the story of the dysfunctional extended family portrayed in the show.  Wood, is of course known for winning a Tony and a Drama League Award for Side Man.  Some of his film critics include: “Dan in Real Life,” “Thirteen Days,” “Michael Clayton” and many more.  He has also appeared in many other off-Broadway and regional theaters.
