Mamma Mia! Soundtrack a Big Hit!

Rent Cast to Perform at Bloomingdales

The cast of the Broadway production of Rent is scheduled to perform and sign autographs at Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street in Manhattan tomorrow night.  Some of the songs that will sung include: “Seasons of Love,” “What You Own,” “Take Me Or Leave Me” and “I’ll Cover You.”  This is a great opportunity for all fans of the popular musical to see and hear these talented stage actors and actresses live.  From July 9-20 Bloomingdale’s is featuring Rent window displays containing costume items from the Broadway production.

Complete Casting For Billy Elliot - The Musical

According to Playbill.com complete casting for the musical, Billy Elliot has been announced.  The show will officially begin previews at the Imperial Theatre on October 1 with an official opening set for November 13.  David Alvarez, Kiril Kulish and Trent Kowalik will all alternate in the musical’s title role.  A plethora of other actors has also been recently cast for the production, all of which can be seen on Playbill.com.  Stephen Daldry will be directing and the music is by Elton John with a book and lyrics by Lee Hall.

According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, “the tale is set in England’s Northeast against the background of a miners’ strike.  The musical concerns a working class boy’s dream of becoming a ballet dancer -  and the obstacles and advocates that he encounters.”  The London production of Billy Elliot won Best New Musical at the 2006 Olivier Awards and it is expected to do exceptionally well in New York City as well.  Be sure to get your own pair of Billy Elliot tickets from Stubhub.com.

Whoopi!

A big name star is getting ready to join the cast of the Broadway company Xanadu.  The announcement was made on an episode of “The View” on July 14.  Whoopi Goldberg is a co-host of the ABC talk show and apparently she will be making her own entrance onto the Broadway stage as the muse Calliope/Aphrodite, who is currently played by Jackie Hoffman.  Goldberg is Acamdemy-Award winning actress, she has appeared on Broadway in Whoopi, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Passing Strange Set to Close

The Tony nominated Broadway production of Passing Strange that combines the electricity of a rock concert with the storytelling of musical theater is scheduled to play its final performance at the Belasco Theatre on July 20.  A statement released by Gerald Schoenfeld of The Shubert Organization was released on Playbill.com said, “We are extremely proud of Passing Strange and its many accomplishments on Broadway.  That Spike Lee will film the show is a crowning achievement and represents a milestone in the American musical theater.”

Casting Announced For A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Spike Lee to Film Passing Strange

Passing Strange, the acclaimed musical that has set records since it has been on Broadway, will be caught on tape by none other than the famed director, Spike Lee.  He will film the production on July 19 at the Belasco Theater in New York City.  The Academy Award nominated director has been a huge fan of the show since its off-Broadway run at the Public Theater.  This will likely be a big event and all fans will want the chance to be at this once-in-a-lifetime show.  The musical features a Tony Award winning book and lyrics by Stew.

Hunter Parrish to Join Spring Awakening

Hunter Parrish, who is known for his role in the hit television show, Weeds will be joining the Broadway cast of Spring Awakening in August.  He is scheduled to step into the role of Melchior, a young radical.  In a statement that was posted on Playbill.com, Parrish was quoted as saying, “I have always hoped that my passion for the theatre would eventually lead me to Broadway.  Spring Awakening is a on-of-a-kind show with its timeless story.”

Spring Awakening is based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind.  It has won eight 2007 Tony Awards since its start on Broadway and it features direction by Michael Mayer and an extremely talented cast.  Some of the most recognized songs that are featured in the musical include: “All That’s Known,” “And Then There Were None,” “Left Behind” and “The Bitch of Living.”  Parrish will be welcomed with open arms into the Spring Awakening community, so make sure to get your own pair of Spring Awakening tickets.

Hunter Parrish To Be Part of Spring Awakening

Some may know him as Silas on Showtime’s Weeds, but Hunter Parrish will make his Broadway debut in Spring Awakening starting in August.  He was quoted in Playbill as saying, “I have always hoped that my passion for the theatre would eventually lead me to Broadway. Spring Awakening is a truly one-of-a-kind show with its timeless story, commanding music and innovative imagery. I am elated to have the opportunity to become a part of it.”

Parrish may be recognized for other roles besides Weeds.  He was also in the movies Freedom Writers and RV with his next film, 17 Again, to come out soon.  He will play the role of Melchior, a young man struggling with what the adult world won’t explain to him and new, ill-fated love.  The show was first a play written by Frank Wedekind in 1891.  The musical won eight Tony Awards in 2007 and has numerous hit songs like “The Dark I Know Well,” “The Guilty Ones” and “The Word of Your Body.”  The actor Parrish is replacing, Kyle Riabko, is leaving to join the vast of Spring Awakening’s national tour.

Broadway’s Phantom Hits 8.500 Shows!

A milestone has certainly been reached today with the production of The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.  The popular production plays its 8,500 performance at the Majestic Theatre, an impressive number for any play.  Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous production is already the longest running show in the Broadway history.  Today, it has many followers and fans around the world.  Since its debut on January 26, 1988 The Phantom of the Opera has grossed $690 million, making it the highest-grossing show in Broadway history.
