Tonight Vanities A New Musical begins its pre-Broadway engagement in the new Pasadena Playhouse in California. According to Playbill.com, Vanities is billed as “a funny, sexy and poignant look at the journey of three All-American girls as they mature from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to independent women. Spanning the turbulent ’60s through the late ’80s, Vanities celebrates the lives and loves of three best friends caught up in rapidly changing times.”
The intimate musical is based on Heifner’s 1976 comedy that actually ran for 1,785 performances Off-Broadway and has blossomed in regional theatres in the years to follow. Performances will continue in California through September 28. The 45th season at the Hartford Stage officially kicks off tonight with Shakespeare’s classic production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Jersey Boys is one of the most popular shows in the theater world right now and the production is heading to Toronto. The run will begin on August 21 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. The sluggish economy has not been good to Broadway. It is more evident now with the recent announcement that the production of Godspell will be postponed, largely due to the loss of a major and essential investor in the show. Producer Adam Epstein was quoted in a statement re-posted on Playbill.com saying that he was “deeply disappointed,” but that “it is my goal to regroup as soon as possible.” Composer Schwartz expressed similar sentiments and both were hopeful that the show will go on at some undetermined date in the future.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is set to open at Broadway’s Marquis Theater on November 23 this year, which is the day before Thanksgiving. Tickets go on sale tomorrow for American Express card members and will then be open for purchase for the the general public on September 21.
