Matt Cavenaugh, who was most recently seen in the Harvey Fierstein-John Bucchino musical called A Catered Affair, has now been offered the role of Tony in the upcoming revival of West Side Story. Cabenaugh initially made his Broadway debut in 2003 with his role in Urban Cowboy. The Broadway play of West Side Story will begin previews on February 23, 2009 and will officially open on Broadway on March 19, 2009. The famed production has long been a fan favorite, both on the stage and on the screen.
According to press notes posted on Playbill.com, “West Side Story transports the achingly beautiful tale of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the turbulent streets of the Upper West Side in 1950’s New York City. Two star crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, find themselves caught between the rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, the ‘Jets’ and the ‘Sharks.’ Their struggle to exist together in a world of violence, hate and prejudice is one of the most heart-breaking, relevant and innovative musical masterpieces of our time.” Get your own pair of West Side Story tickets to see the show.
