Hairspray Closing: Fierstein returning for the last shabang

Rumor has it that Harvey Fierstein will be reprising his role as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. The show is also rumored to be closing in January of 2009. Fierstein won a Tony Award for Best Actor for his performance in the role back in 2003. His incredible ability as an actor brought him to the top of the class, as he performed the part of self-conscious Edna, who eventually gains confidence as she learns that she is as beautiful as she is big.

On October 2, it was announced that an announcement about the show’s future would be coming very shortly. The show, which has had an excellent run on Broadway, is a reproduction from the original show by John Waters. The first movie was made in 1988, and starred Divine as Edna Turnblad. When the more recent movie was made in 2007, John Travolta took the role of Edna drawing protests from the gay rights community because the role did not coincide with his religious beliefs. (Travolta is a Scientologist.)

When the musical opened for the first time in this century, ticket sales went through the roof. The show was a big hit from the beginning, and it didn’t hurt that a movie with an all-star cast was made as well. People have flocked to see it on stage. Time, it seems, is now limited, however, so it would be a good idea to get your tickets as soon as possible. Hairspray will soon be hanging up it’s high heels and putting away the hair products until it’s next run on Broadway.
