Shrek Debuting on Broadway

The musical Shrek has become one of the most well-loved animations of this generation. Shrek, who first appeared on screen in 2001, has become an important figure on today’s cultural landscape. The idea that you can be whatever you want to be, no matter how strange it may seem to others, has opened up a whole new core of thought for the younger generations.

As important and loved as the film is, it has been hard to make the transfer onto stage, but it is being done. The musical Shrek, is debuting on Broadway in November, and promises to be a great musical to see.  Most difficult to carry on from the film has been the signature voices that are present in the film, which give it the characteristic touch that has been endearing children to it since it was released.

However, with the excellent cast available, it will definitely be living up to the standards that children have learned to expect from the movies. The cast for the musical is as follows:  Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek, Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber is Lord Farquaad, Daniel Breaker is Donkey and John Tartaglia is Pinocchio. This is definitely a musical worth seeing, especially if you were a fan of the film, so be sure to get your tickets at Stubhub.com today!

A Tale of Two Cities Perfoms for Peace

This morning the Broadway cast from “A Tale of Two Cities” will be performing for the United Nations Stand up for Peace event in the the United Nations Lawn near the Peace Bell. The show, which is about the poverty and inequality that led to the French Revolution, is an excellent choice to promote this event. Participants will be responding to a global call for action, they will be standing up against poverty, and standing up for the Millennium Developement Goals.

The STAND UP innitiative is now in its third year, the innitiative was started as a way for people around the globe to request that their leaders take action against poverty and inequality. With 50,000 people dying each day because of poverty, and the socio-economical gap between classes widening, close to half of the world’s population now live in poverty. October 17-19 are now labeled the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The choice of A Tale of Two Cities as the show to promote Stand Up, is a poignant one. The it is  the tale of a group of upper and middle class poeple struggling with conflict and intriuge as France balances on the verge of civil unrest. As the plot unfolds we find that while one character has denounced his inheritance, another is planning to destroy him for the crimes of his wealthy uncle. This is an intruiguing marriage between the stage and a socio-economic event, and will be intersesting to see how it influences the choices of the world’s population.

Phantom of the Opera: Longest Running Show

Phantom of the Opera is currently the longest running show on Broadway. The show is based on the book Le Fantome de L’Opera, by Gaston Leroux, which was published in 1911. Gaston Leroux was a fascinating man in his own right, who went from disinterested lawyer, to millionaire, to broke, to famous investigative reporter in a period covering little more than a year.

Though he did not live to see his story reach its full success, dying in 1927 at the age of 59, Gaston did see the story play on the screen in Paris.

Frank Langella in A Man For All Seasons

The part of Sir Thomas More, in A Man For All Seasons, is currently being played by Frank Langella. Last year Langella wowed audiences with his depiction of Richard Nixon. Filling these two very different roles shows off Langella to his full extent, showing his immense capabilities as an actor.

A Man for All Seasons is the story of Sir Thomas More, one of the more noble men who had their rise and fall during the reign of King Henry VIII.  He was one of several politicians that openly opposed both King Henry VIII and his father King Henry VII in their open disputes with the Pope. He refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boleyn, and was strongly against the annulment of the King’s marriange to Katherine of Aragon. He was eventually condemned as a traitor because of his refusal to sign two documents. The first was the Act of Succession, proclaiming the children of Henry and Anne as the first successors to the throne. The second was the Oath of Supremacy which made King Henry VIII the head of the Church of England. On July 6, 1535 Sir Thomas More was beheaded. He was canonized by the Catholic Church as a saint in 1935.

A Man for All Seasons is the story of a man who lived up to his private convictions, even though it cost him his life. He refused to back down from what he believed was true, and defended his stance despite powerful and dangerous opposition. This is a great play to see, so be sure to get your tickets through Stubhub.com today!
