Filming of Gypsy’s Last Performance

Gypsy, a musical that is roughly based on the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous stripper and dancer from the 20th Century, is currently one of the most critically acclaimed musicals on Broadway. With Patti LuPone in the leading role of Rose, the mother who is so bent on her daughters becoming stars she puts her ambitions before their welfare.

The musical has one three Tony Awards this year for its leading characters. LuPone received the Tony for Leading Actress in a Musical. Laura Benanti, playing the part of Gypsy Rose Lee, received the Tony for Best Supporting Actress and Boyd Gains was awarded Best Supporting Actor. The show also received seven other Tony Award Nominations. It was nominated for six Outer Circle Awards, winning half of them.

Notices have been posted that the final performances of Gypsy may be filmed for future purposes. There may be cameras placed throughout the theater, both stationary and moving, to capture the historic final production of the musical on film. The final performance is taking plae on March 1, 2009.
