A Phantom Birthday

If the musical Phantom of the Opera was a person, then as of the 26 it will be of legal age. That’s right! The famous musical Phantom of the Opera is going to be celebrating its 21 birthday on Broadway on Monday, January 26, 2009. On that date the musical will play performance number 8,732 and will be the first Broadway production to have run for 21 years. The musical passed up Cats! as the longest running musical in 2006 and today it has far outlasted all other contenders for the position. Like the book, which is always available in bookstores worldwide, this musical is now one of the establishments of the stage. In total the show has grossed $715 million dollars, also making it the most lucrative show in Broadway history.

The musical tells the story of a man known only as The Phantom of the Opera, who hides himself away from site and only comes out to inspire the young vocalist Christine. He may be a madman, he may be the cause of many mysterious and ominous happenings in the opera house, but he is above all else a musical genius.
