As our economic crisis deepens, Broadway has predictably seen a drop in ticket sales. But there are several musicals that are still grossing over a million dollars a week. In the week ending on the 11th of this month there were three shows on Broadway, apart from the predictable Wicked, that continued to gross over one million dollars in ticket sales. These were Billy Elliot: The Musical, Jersey Boys, and the ever popular Disney production, The Lion King.
These three musicals are are all grounded in familiar and popular culture, giving them a leg up in the ticket office. Billy Elliot was already a well-known story as an Oscar-nominated film, so seeing it on Broadway is the next step for the already popular story. Jersey Boys tells the sotyr of the Four Seasons, a group of singers who were one of the most popular bands in their day. The musical is also doubly appealing in this time of economic crisis as a true-life rags-to-riches story. And then, of course, there is Lion King which was first famous as the Oscar Award-winning Disney animated film. Any of these are great musicals to go and see, so be sure to check out your Broadway tickets today!
