Mary Stuart on Broadway

Friedrich Shiller’s Mary Stuart is opening on Broadway in April for the first time in almost 40 years. It has been 422 years since Mary Queen of Scots was executed for plotting to kill Queen Elizabeth, and her story still fascinates historians today. Considered one of, if not the most beautiful queen in Europe in her day, Mary Queen of Scots led a tragic life, and spent much of it either on the run or imprisoned by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I.

In Friedrich Shiller’s play the relationship between these two cousins is thoroughly explored with all the twists of plot, the betrayals and the mysteries that surrounded them. The play reaches its peak in a scene where the two cousins meet, an event that never happened in real life but that was imagined by Schiller as an occurance that could have happened.

The play is as thrilling and real as any modern-day thriller, despite being written in the 18th Century, around 200 years after the two women lived and ruled in what is now known as the British Isles. Mary Stuart stars Janet McTeer and Harriet Walter, appearing in a new version by Peter Oswald, directed by Phillida Lloyd. Get your Mary Stuart tickets and enjoy this historical theatrical event!
