Spring Awakening is Touching Hearts on Broadway

Spring Awakening was written by musical theater novices, songwriter Duncan Sheik and playwright Steven Sater. During its off-Broadway engagement the musical sold out shows in the 165 seat theater that it first came to the stage at. But critics and theater-goers alike wondered weather this musical would do as well when it actually arrived on Broadway. It did. In 2007 the musical won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. And audiences and critics alike raved about this new Broadway musical that was using history in order to look forward and celebrate the 21st Century.

Spring Awakening is the story of three adolescents towards the end of the 19th Century in Germany. The story deals with how these youngsters deal with puberty and the changes that come with it. The musical is specifically designed to touch the hearts of teens and young adults, and it does just that. Using a play of the same name by 19th Century German writer Wedekind, the play shows the struggle that occurs when teens are kept in darkness about the nature of life and not given enough information to navigate the difficult passages of youth.
