Paulo Szot to Star in South Pacific

Paulo Szot is a renowned baritone is currently filling role of Emile de Becque, the French landowner who falls in love with Nellie, the military nurse. Szot has already won a Tony Award for his performance in the same role in the current Lincoln production, and will be joining the Metropolitan Opera’s 2009-2010 season. He will be staring in the new production of Dmitri Shotakovich’s opera, The Nose which is being designed and directed by William Kentridge. South Pacific is the story of two pairs of lovers during WW II. The first is Nellie Forbush and Emile de Becque and the second is the Lt. Joseph Cable and Liat. Emile de Becque is a Frenchman and Nellie is a sunny-spirited woman from Little Rock Arkansaw. The two hit it off immediately, until the prejudices that Nellie has learned threaten to undo their relationship. The same is true of Lt. Joseph Cable and Liat, though he loves Liat, Cable cannot conceive of marrying her because of his learned prejudices.
