In 2009-2010 there will be eight new productions at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Four of the productions are company premiere, making this year especially exciting. Paulo Szot is a renowned baritone is currently filling role of Emile de Becque, the French landowner who falls in love with Nellie, the military nurse. The previews for 33 Variations are starting this evening at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in New York. The play tells the story of Beethoven’s obsession with a piece of music by a little-known composer and music publisher from Vienna. Jane Fonda will be heading up the cast that is headed up by Jane Fonda and includes Samantha Mathis, Colin Hanks, Zack Grenier, Don Amendolia, Susan Kellerman, Erik Steele, and Diane Walsh. The design team includes set designer Derek McLane, costume designer Janice Pytel with additional costumes by David C. Woolard, lights by David Lander, sound by Andre Pluess, projection design by Jeff Sugg, hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe, choreography by Daniel Pelzig and dramaturg by Mark Bly. The play will be beginning its previews at 8:00pm tonight.
33 Variations is written and directed by Moises Kaufman, who is also famous for plays such as Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde and The Laramie Project. The Ford Theater in Washington, D.C., is now hosting the world premiere of a new play by James Still, celebrating the grand reopening and the bicentennial of President Lincoln’s birth. With the play Still, the director, Stephen Rayne, and the veteran actor, David Selby, are attempting to bring to life the 16th President, without falling prey to the caricature of Lincoln so often presented in plays and documentaries today.
The play covers one of the most siginificant points in Lincoln’s life and career as President, beginning with the death of his eleven-year-old son, William, and ending with the Emancipation Proclaimation. The play follows the most trying period of Lincoln’s life as he struggles to conquer the world around him, and does so through an amazing transformation in his thinking. Will Ferrell’s Broadway show You’re Welcome America is celebrating its official opening tonight, at the Cort Theater in New York. In the show Ferrell portrays the late President Bush, giving a comical rendering of the former president. The show also stars Pia Glenn as a rather unconventional Condoleezza Rice, Michael Delaney as Dr. Scott blumeth, Patrick Ferrell as a Secret Service Operative, and Adam Mucci as the Pilot. HBO will be doing a live telecast of You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George Bush on March 14, 2009, it will be directe by Marty Callner.
Will Ferrell’s show has already been filling the Cort Theater to capacity every night that it has been seen on stage. Drew is a playwright who has retired from the public world to become a mailman, working alongside his father.
It unfolds that Peg is actually a playwright, who is down on her luck and is hoping to convince her son to help her write a new play. Despite his disinterest, Peg constantly throws ideas at her son, and eventually unearths an old manuscript of his that he had hidden in a drawer.
