Tonight marks a historic event as the musical West Side Story officially returns to Broadway for the first time since 1980. This classic musical is a re-telling of the story of Romeo and Juliet for the 1960s. The musical was very popular as a film, and has continued to be well-regarded since it first appeared in 1961. In the film Natalie Wood starred as the young female heroine, Maria, and Richard Beymer took the role of Tony, the Romeo-type figure who Maria falls in love with.
Instead following the original plot of the famous play by Shakespeare, the musical takes place in New York City in the 1950s. Where two gangs, the Sharks and the Jets are warring for control of their neighborhood. The two groups come from different ethnic backgrounds, and both are vying for their piece of America. When the musical opens tonight there is bound to be a huge crowd, but fortunately for fans West Side Story tickets are now available through November at StubHub.com. The musical opens tonight at the palace Theater in New York, starring George Akram as Bernardo, Matt Cavenaugh as Tony, and Josephina Scaglione as Bernardo’s sister.
