Jude Law Returns to Wyndham’s Theatre

Actor Jude Law has been dominating the film industry for the last several years, and now this British heartthrob is making the return to London, where he’ll star in the summer production of Hamlet at Wyndham’s Theatre. The already-sold out production starts today and officially opens on June 3, running through August 22 and undoubtedly providing some of the summer’s hottest entertainment in London.

The Michael Grandage-directed version of Hamlet features Law in the title role of the production and also includes Alan Turkington (Fortinbras/Fancisco), Alex Waldmann (Laertes), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Ophelia), Ron Cook (Polonius), John MacMillan (Rosencrantz), Kevin R. McNally (Cladius), Penelope Wilton (Gertrude) and more. Hamlet was originally supposed to be directed by Kenneth Branagh, but Branagh bowed out due to commitments with his upcoming film Thor, leaving direction up to the company’s Artistic Director Michael Grandage.

This upcoming run with Hamlet is Jude Law’s first return to the London stage since his roles in the Young Vic’s productions of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore and Dr. Faustus, though he has also been involved in several Box Office hits recently such as The Holiday, Closer and I Heart Huckabees, among several others.

‘Rock of Ages’ to Join ‘Today’

Memorial Day just got a little bit better, and it’s all because performers of the smash Broadway musical Rock of Ages will join NBC’s morning program The Today Show on Monday as part of the Toyota Concert Series. Performing in three segments on The Today Show, cast members of the five-time Tony Award-nominated production will take the main stage during the program, performing a slew of hit songs included in the Broadway musical. Is Adam Lambert Headed for Broadway?

America voted, and the talented but underrated vocalist Kris Allen ultimately took the crown for the most recent season of American Idol, beating out glam-rock favorite Adam Lambert for the title in last night’s broadcast. Sometimes place doesn’t matter, and so is the case for American Idol - just look at second place finishers like Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry; is Lambert headed to this same type of phenomenal runner-up success? While the world scrutinizes Adam Lambert’s every move from now on, several media outlets have suggested a snug fit for this smoky-eyed star: Broadway.

Prior to joining the cast of American Idol, Lambert made cameos in the Los Angeles production of Wicked, also touring with the show for a six-month stint. He’s also appeared in The Ten Commandments and The Zodiac Show, leaving audiences to wonder what this newfound exposure will do for the American Idol alum as he plots his next move. Lucky for Lambert, there is a smorgasbord of rock-oriented productions on the Broadway scene right now, including Bono and the Edge’s Spider-Man and Green Day’s American Idiot show. Will America’s favorite rocker soon appear on Broadway? Stay tuned to find out!

TV Host Harris Joins the Cast of ‘Chicago’

TV personality Samantha Harris wrapped up the latest season of Dancing with the Stars last night by pronouncing Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson the winner of the celebrity ballroom dancing competition, but she’s not taking a breather from the spotlight now that the show has ended. Harris announced on last night’s DWTS that she’ll be joining the cast of Broadway’s Chicago this summer, making her Broadway debut on July 7 as she begins a six-week stint in the musical as the fame-hungry murderess Roxie Hart. Harris will appear in the Tony-winning revival Chicago from July 7 to August 16 before immediately jumping into the same role in Greenville, SC as part of the Chicago national tour, playing the part of Roxie in the production at the Peace Center from August 18-23.

Though this summer will be her first go with Broadway, Samantha Harris is no stranger to the stage. She’s had roles in the North American tour of Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python and in the L.A. cast of Reefer Madness: The New “Hit” Musical, and this versatile entertainer has also been a staple figure on television programs Dancing with the Stars and The Insider, as well.

‘Lion King’ Opens in Vegas

The Broadway masterpiece The Lion King has been burning up the musical scene for quite a while now, and last weekend the show made its Las Vegas premiere at Mandalay Bay Theatre, becoming the eighth run of The Lion King to currently run on stages worldwide. The Lion King at Sin City’s casino and hotel Mandalay Bay is the latest addition to jump aboard the Lion King circuit, as the musical is also playing in New York, London, Hamburg, Paris, Tokyo and Fukuoka, as well as on the North American National Tour.

Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Group, recently spoke of the production’s Las Vegas inception, saying, “The Las Vegas production is every bit the equal of the spectacular Broadway experience. From the stunning procession of animals that fill the aisles during the ‘Circle of Life’ and the wildebeest stampede to the show’s climactic battle, all of the magic of the original vision will be realized onstage at Mandalay Bay.”

The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre continues to be one of the top-grossing Broadway productions on the scene, raking in $1,058,942 last week (May 11 - May 17), only falling short of the musicals Wicked, West Side Story and Billy Elliot.

‘Love Never Dies’ To Hit Broadway in 2010

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, the sequel to his award-winning production Phantom of the Opera, is officially in the works, as it’s been announced that Webber revealed Love Never Dies will premiere in London next March, going on Broadway soon thereafter. Webber, recently on Jonathan Ross’ UK talk show, made a statement regarding the material for Love Never Dies, saying that the production will be emotional, complicated and altogether intense. Webber described the production as “the most personal project he has ever written,” and Love Never Dies is expected to be one of the biggest productions of 2010.

If it follows the pattern of Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies is sure to be one sensational Broadway production, as Phantom currently sits as the highest-grossing show in Broadway history, having garnered more than $700 million since its debut in 1988. It is also the longest-running show in Broadway history, and its sequel Love Never Dies looks to be entirely as successful. As of now, rumor has it that Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess will star in the London production of Love Never Dies, but more details for this monumental Broadway production are sure to unfold as the months progress.

Desire Under the Elms Makes Early Exit from Broadway

Maybe it’s the economy. Perhaps it’s been overshadowed by the booming success of Billy Elliot and Shrek. Whatever the reason, Robert Falls’ adaptation of the Eugene O’Neill classic Desire Under the Elms has announced its early departure from Broadway, closing at the end of this month - six weeks early from its scheduled finish. Next Sunday, May 24, will be the last showing of Desire Under the Elms, as a lack of Tony nominations and low sales have aided in the early closing of the Broadway production.

Desire Under the Elms, a provocative Greek tragedy-inspired show featuring Brian Dennehy, Carla Gugino and Pablo Schreiber, opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on April 27 after previews from April 14, and the production was scheduled to close on July 5. The much-anticipated show garnered rave reviews but still failed to rope in a huge audience, selling less than 30% of its seats in the week of May 4-10 and bringing in only $200,000.

While Desire Under the Elms is gracefully bowing out, several other productions like Billy Elliot: The Musical, Shrek, 9 to 5, Rock of Ages and Mary Stuart are still going strong, leaving theatergoers anxious in the wake of the upcoming Tony Awards.
